Education Program (Non-Formal & Adult Education)
SJOUK
believes that education is the fundamental tool for breaking the cycle
of poverty and social exploitation. Our Education Program is designed to
reach the most marginalized segments of society—those who have been
excluded from the formal schooling system due to poverty, geographical
barriers, or social circumstances. Since its inception, this program has
focused on two primary pillars: Non-Formal Education (NFE) for children and Adult Literacy for group members. To achieve 100% literacy among the project group members. To prepare underprivileged children for mainstream primary education through pre-primary support. To reduce the school dropout rate in rural Gaibandha and surrounding districts. To
empower adults with functional literacy (reading, writing, and basic
calculation) so they can manage their own finances and legal rights. 1. Pre-Primary Education (Preparation for Schooling) 2. Non-Formal Education (NFE) for Underprivileged Children 3. Functional Adult Literacy (Male & Female) Skill Development:
Beyond just writing their names, members learn to read passbooks,
calculate interest for their micro-savings, and understand government
notices. Social Awareness: Literacy classes are also used as a platform to discuss social issues like child marriage, hygiene, and women’s rights. Community Involvement:
We don’t just run schools; we work with parents. Our field workers
regularly visit households to inspire parents to prioritize their
children's education over child labor. Technical Partnership: Our education initiatives are supported by technical guidance from PEDP-2/DNFPE under the Directorate of Primary Education, Government of Bangladesh. This ensures that our curriculum aligns with national standards. Qualified Mentors:
We employ local teachers who understand the community's culture, making
the learning environment comfortable and effective for the students. 550+ Children are currently receiving education across 20 learning centers (NFE & Pre-primary). Significant increase in the number of children transitioning from SJOUK centers to Government Primary Schools. Hundreds
of adult members who were previously illiterate can now sign their own
documents and manage their group savings independently. Created a "learning culture" within the project areas, where education is seen as a path to dignity and self-reliance.Objectives
Core Components of the Program
SJOUK operates 10 Pre-primary schools
specifically designed for children from ultra-poor families. These
schools serve as a bridge, helping young children develop the habit of
attending school, learning basic alphabets, and social skills. By the
time they reach the age for formal primary school, they are confident
and ready to join mainstream institutions.
For children who have either never enrolled in school or have dropped out early, SJOUK runs 10 Non-Formal Education (NFE) centers. Currently, we are providing quality basic education to 550 children.
These centers use flexible learning hours and child-friendly teaching
methods to ensure that every child, regardless of their financial
background, has the opportunity to learn.
Empowering
the parents is as important as educating the children. SJOUK conducts
adult literacy classes for both male and female members of our
development groups.Our Approach and Methodology
